Bohemian Ruby Cut-to-Clear Crystal Pitcher & Tumbler Set — 7 Pieces, Circa 1890s–1920s
Deep as a garnet held to candlelight, this complete Bohemian ruby crystal service arrests the eye from across the room. A generous pitcher and six matching tumblers — each hand-cut with the classic star rosette and palm fan motifs that define the great Karlsbad tradition — glow with that particular depth only ruby flash glass achieves: crimson at the surface, blush where the crystal sings through.
The cutting is crisp and confident throughout: geometric hobstar medallions anchor each panel, feathered pinwheels radiate between them, and the scalloped base registers are meticulously matched across all seven pieces. The pitcher’s clear applied handle carries the satisfying weight of proper lead crystal. Each tumbler bottom bears its own interior star — a detail most only notice once water is poured.
The slight variation in cutting between individual tumblers — each star placed by hand, each fan unique — speaks to the era of their making, when Bohemian craftsmen were producing for the great American export market at the height of the cut glass craze.
Whether displayed on open shelving or pressed into glorious use at the table, this is a set that commands the room.
