French-Style Ormolu & Onyx Triple Salt Cellar with Dragon Handle

Three onyx bowls, each rimmed in gilt metal with fine beaded detail, held together by an extraordinary central handle formed from three intertwined dragons in the Orientalist taste. The onyx varies beautifully across the trio — warm cream with amber and caramel veining, no two bowls identical.

The dragon motif reflects the chinoiserie fever that swept European decorative arts in the 19th century, when Eastern-inspired forms appeared on everything from porcelain to furniture to objects exactly like this one.
